Quick, Hide, Someone’s At The Door!

Century-Door

First of all let me state for the record that I’m not a big fan of the “pop in”, where a person stops by without any warning or prior notice. I understand that you really could be in the neighborhood and want to stop by and see me. I like a phone call or a text at least. Of course it still happens, and I hate being caught off guard with a crazy looking house. So if this happens to you, then I have a thought to share with you: Uncluttering my home allows me to welcome unexpected guests with fear, embarrassment, or stress.

While you are doing your Spring Cleaning, there are several major holidays during this time (Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day) and other events that usually happen (Graduation, Prom, Spring Break). There are also a lot of birthdays during this time, so there are many instances where someone may stop over. My suggestion is to start with the room people will see first!

If people come through the front door, then start with THAT room. If folks are coming in a side entrance and it leads to the kitchen, then unclutter the kitchen. You get the idea. It’s good for YOU to do this but the added benefit is that “they” can’t make any disparaging comments or make fun of you. Uncluttering has so many benefits!

Changing Your Outlook/Helping Others

LogoColorTextBelow.111203434_std

I believe that there is usually several ways to look at a situation or an issue. How you handle that situation or issue depends on which way you choose to look at it. Yes, I feel you have choices at how you look at things. This includes uncluttering your space. For example you can look at as getting rid of stuff. When you look at it that way, feelings and pains of parting ways with the items can become too much to handle. Then chances are NOTHING gets done. BUT, if you look at it as giving stuff to people or organizations that need and can use it, it becomes paying it forward. You’re passing it on!

Of course, if something holds a lot of value to you, then keep it . Just ask yourself if the pain of getting rid of it outweighs the pain of keeping it. Will you REALLY think about it after its gone? If its something useful, think about the smile on that persons face who really needed it and uses it, as opposed to it sitting in the back of the closet taking up space and collecting dust.

Getting rid of stuff, I mean, giving stuff away can feel rewarding and recycling is ALWAYS good, right?

What’s The Worst That Can Happen If I Get Rid Of That

LogoColorTextBelow.111203434_std

AS you began to un-clutter and sort through your belongings, I invite you to ask yourself TWO questions as you look at something that you haven’t used in a long time and are conflicted to get rid of it:

What’s the worst thing that could happen if i get rid of this?

Is it something that I could get rather easily and inexpensively if the time comes and I need it?

YES the first question sounds so melodramatic. But that’s the point. When you put it in THOSE terms, I feel it neutralizes its important and the conflict should resolve itself. The second question is a practical one. If its something that is HARD to find or rather unique, then find a suitable place for it to be stored. If it’s a giant box of paper clips…well you know you can ALWAYS get paper clips!
