Super Tip Thursday- Observation vs Judgement

18 Sep

Listening-and-Observation

As organizers we have to leave all judgement out of our work. It’s a good thing to practice in other areas of our lives too. Especially if we are helping friends or family with an issue or situation. What do you actually see? What did you actually hear? Observations aren’t judgments or labeling. Since I’ve put this into practice in my personal and professional lives, my relationships have gone a lot smoother and I feel less tress.

Observation is NOT:

  • making assumptions
  • asking questions
  • imagining something else is going on
  • speculation
Observation IS:
  • looking
  • listening
  • making a systematic or scientific observation
For example: You walk into a room and see a shelf with a lot of “stuff” on it. That’s an observation.
You walk into a room and see a cluttered shelf with crap on it. That’s NOT an observation.
